Emiratisation: EIBFS recognizes 61 Emiratis from HSBC for successful completion of certified banking operation program
Dubai-UAE: xx May 2022–Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies (EIBFS), a regional leader in banking and finance education and training, hosted a graduation ceremony to award 61 Emirati professionals from HSBC for completing the Certified Banking Operation Program (CBO), part of the institute's Emiratisation drive. The CBO program sets out competency and practice-oriented development modules covering seven banking practices and specializations.
Over five weeks, through the program, the participants were given an in-depth understanding of various banking areas such as risk management, business ethics and quality management, banking law in UAE and banking theories and practices. Moreover, the course also covered operational aspects as well as various technology and regulatory requirements.
The International program was delivered in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers through a mix of e-learning sessions as well as live classes to provide support for Emiratisation initiatives and qualify national cadres to ensure their career growth.
Jamal Al Jassmi, General Manager of EIBFS and Abdulfattah Sharaf, Chief Executive Officer, HSBC UAE and Head of International, HSBC Bank Middle East Limited, both handed out the certificates to the trainees at a graduation ceremony that was held at the EIBFS XXX campus.
The event was attended by EIBFS board of directors chaired by His Excellency Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates.
Jamal Al Jassmi, said: “We are pleased to have delivered the Certified Banking Operation Program to the Emirati workforce at HSBC. The program is designed to prepare Emirati finance professionals to take on the challenges facing the banking and financial services sector today and turn them into opportunities. We have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with HSBC and are happy to be able to serve their learning and development needs.”
He added: “At EIBFS, we are committed to accelerate the UAE government’s Emiratisation efforts through offering a well-rounded experience to our trainees and executing a competency driven qualifications for the various jobs in the banking sector to support UAE nationals in skilling, upskilling and reskilling them in various banking domains and assist the banks to reach their annual recruitment and training targets. We are proud of all that they have achieved so far and wish them all the very best for all their future endeavors in the banking sector.”

Over the years, EIBFS has managed to carve a niche for itself in the region for providing best-in-class training and education programs in the banking and finance industry and have trained around 300,000 banking professionals during the past 38 years. In 2021, the institute trained 32,317 professionals of which 36 per cent were Emirati bankers playing an important role in supporting the UAE’s Emiratization strategy to increase Emirati representation in the workforce.
In October, EIBFS unveiled its 2022 Annual Training Plan (ATP), a skills map for financial and banking professionals to deepen specialist skillsets to better serve the UAE’s growing banking ecosystem. The plan features a range of international certificates, professional certificates, Insight e-learning and learning bundles. Trainees can opt for full-fledged courses, micro-learning modules or self-paced learning options.

CBUAE Governor chairs first EIBFS Board of Directors meeting
- His Excellency: Restructuring EIBFS training plans will enhance Emiratisation strategy in the financial and banking sectors
Abu Dhabi, UAE (26 May 2022): His Excellency Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE), Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies (EIBFS), chaired the first meeting of the new EIBFS Board of Directors on Thursday 26 May.
At the beginning of the meeting, His Excellency congratulated the new EIBFS Board of Directors, and wished them success in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities to promote the competitiveness of the financial and banking sectors and develop the skills of Emiratis in the sectors. He emphasized the confidence and support from His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the CBUAE in the new Board to achieve its plans and strategies, which aim to provide training and equip young Emiratis with the necessary skills and global expertise to lead the UAE financial and banking sectors, in line with the directives of the leadership for Emiratisation.
In addition, His Excellency thanked the former members of the Board for their efforts and initiatives to develop the Institute.
He also confirmed that the new Board of Directors will work on structuring and developing the Institute's training plans and programmes to keep pace with international best practice, strengthening plans to develop the skills of national cadres working in the financial and banking sectors at various professional and leadership levels, enhancing Emiratisation strategy and the development of the national economy.
Furthermore, His Excellency pointing out the Institute’s additional mandate to follow up on the implementation of the CBUAE’s Emiratisation initiatives being a strategic partner for the banking, financial and economic sectors, and an industry provider of qualified national competencies to keep pace with the labour market’s requirements in these sectors.
During the meeting, the Board discussed topics and issues on the agenda, including reviewing the Annual Report that highlighted the EIBFS’s activities and projects, and the Financial and Administrative Report. The Board elected Mr. Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor of the CBUAE for Strategic Affairs - Financial Infrastructure and Digitisation Department, as its Vice Chairman.
Previously, the EIBFS General Assembly had approved the restructuring of its Board of Directors, where the Governor of the CBUAE would become Board Chairman. It also authorised the new Board to amend the Institute’s primary law to achieve the CBUAE’s strategic goals and initiatives.
In addition to EIBFS Board Chairman and Vice Chairman, other Board members attending the meeting included Mr. Alaa Erekat, Group CEO of Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Mr. Mohammed Abdullah, CEO of Sharjah Islamic Bank, Mr. Hamad Abdullah Al Mehyas, CEO of the National Health Insurance Company (Daman), Ms. Eman Abdulrazzaq, Chief Human Resources Officer for Emirates NBD Group, Mr. Ehab Anis Al Ameri, Head of Human Resources Department at the CBUAE, Mr. Shehab Al Zaabi, Head of Licensing at the CBUAE, and H.E. Jamal Al Jassmi, EIBFS General Manager.

The banking and the financial sector are never transforming before. While digital technologies are reshaping payments, lending, insurance, and wealth management, which have been further accelerated by the global pandemic, the evolving financial services industry in many economies is also making more countries diverse, competitive, efficient, and inclusive.
Technological progress and innovation are the lynchpins of fintech development in the region and beyond and will continue to drive disruptive business models in the financial services sector. These key technologies and trends are becoming increasingly intertwined and integrated, giving massive impetus to the fintech and financial industry innovation.
Financial institutions will need to bring their resources to bear to stay on top of the gathering wave of financial industry disruption. And this requires financial professionals to up their game to be adept with the changing needs of the sector — both from the technology and the skillset standpoint.

And this is where the Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies (EIBFS) plays a key role by equipping the finance professionals in the country with the latest knowledge and skills and focused on researching how the global and regional financial sector would evolve driven by the disruptive forces which have reached its inflection point.
The disruptive changes in the financial sector, driven by digital forces, have created the need for new skills and competencies for the existing and future banking workforce. Apart from creating a highly-skilled future talent pool, the Institute is steadfast in its efforts to upskill and reskill the current workforce.
The new learning plan is a testimony to its vision to create industry-leading benchmarks for professional excellence in all banking functions. Through its training from awareness level to training for the senior management and the Board of Directors in this space, the effort is to support the institutions by analyzing these trends and aligning their strategies and people skills in this direction.
Skills paramount
With a solid commitment to equipping UAE Nationals, the institute has developed a comprehensive national plan to skill, reskill and upskill UAE nationals. As a strategic partner to the government in its Emiratization strategy, it is building a new generation of Emirati talent in specialized roles.
In the coming years, increasingly, it will be the Gen Z and younger cohorts who will reshape the banking and financial industry, thanks to their skills in the tech-savvy, mobile-first world, which will have ramifications for all consumer companies, and investors across the industry.
EIBFS has been globally integrated with various leading institutes and universities of the world, including the University of Oxford, Harvard Business School, Chartered Banker, UAE Human Resources Authority, UAE Ministry of Education, Chartered Insurance Institute, and Dubai Judicial Institute, among others to bring and offer the best programs and courses in banking and finance to the UAE.
The contribution from all stakeholders, i.e., government, regulators, financial institutions, start-ups, and investors, has become a key enabler to building a robust fintech ecosystem and creating a conducive environment of collaboration and dynamism. The sweeping changes introduced by fintech start-ups are likely to have an impact that extends beyond the confines of the traditional financial services industry. Financial institutions are increasingly adopting a collaborative approach with fintech start-ups to provide personalized and engaged services to customers. The institute has made significant contributions to the life and careers of thousands of students and working professionals in banking and finance, supported by its highly qualified, skilled, and experienced academicians and corporate trainers. With its core focus areas on decentralized finance [DeFi], cryptocurrencies, digital currencies, virtual assets, NFTs, and Metaverse, the recent regulations in the UAE on the virtual assets show the importance given by the UAE in these emerging emerging technologies futuristic areas.
Research has shown that financial institutions need to be cognizant of these dynamics and align their strategies and skills in this direction. In line with this, the institute is training finance professionals to see how financial institutions can leverage the web 3.0 ecosystem and explore the potential opportunities in the Metaverse and prepare for the challenges from the DeFi ecosystem, which is becoming increasingly popular and scalable.
Supporting the UAE’s vision
Through these endeavors, the long-standing goal is to support the UAE’s government’s vision to build a knowledge-based economy, with a comprehensive national plan to skill, reskill and upskill UAE nationals to ensure that they remain up to date on current matters and capable of securing high-potential jobs in the banking and financial sector.
In line with this, the EIBFS 2022 Learning Plan reflects its futuristic vision to understand the evolving nature of jobs and the related skills and competencies. The rapid strides made in blockchain, artificial intelligence, robotic process automation, etc. means that the skills and competencies needed for future banking jobs could be very different from the current skillsets.
While blockchain is revolutionizing cross-border payments, machine learning is helping banks protect themselves and helping to identify advanced risk models.

With a portfolio of over 370 courses and around 1,000 program schedules, the 2022 plan will holistically cater to the needs of the industry. The learning solutions are aligned to the national vision of developing a high-quality Emirati talent pool, who are ready for the future, working closely with the Central Bank of UAE, Ministry of Emiratization, Human Resources Authority, and other stakeholders to skill, upskill and reskill the UAE national in the financial sector.
